I own several URC remotes and have been generally pleased with them. I called Amazon support and the only advice they could give was to return it, which I have done. Software included and also available for download and it works on a Mac. When I saw the listing for this product Universal Remote Control MX-810 Custom Programmable Remote Control with PC Wizard Software which included the software I bought it. That's OK but neither they nor Amazon should be selling their products on a consumer focused site. It came, but with no software. While URC doesn't provide consumer support, they did provide links on their Web site to download the programming software which was PC only. I replaced it with the Logitech Harmony One and what a difference.
I went to the URC Web site and all software downloads have disappeared. I sent an email to URC customer support but got no reply. URC has clearly chosen to service professional installers exclusively. Save yourself a lot of disappointment and buy the Harmony One.Update: I finally did receive a response from URC with a link to the software but in the meantime have replaced it.
that's the best we can do on this). Everything about this remote is painful. After 3 hours of building a profle I am stuck unable ot load it to the device. Support is poor, 4/5 of my devices where not found leaving me to track down the codes, software has well documented issues (do a goolge search for 'Unable to Obtain Model ID' - no resolution but to keep trying till it works. Really. Near as I can tell this is a nice looking paperweight. Return Label requested this is shipping back today.
Unless you get the remote with the PC programming package, you will need to get someone to program it for you; that can be expensive and take a while. I did not know that I needed an RF module but that only cost an extra $100. I got this as an "open box" item. It cost me $100 and 2 hours. I initially regretted not getting the new Logitech universal remote. However, after getting this programmed(by a pro), I am very happy with the purchase. It is very easy to use and fits comfortable in my hand. I would continue to purchase URC products.
This remote is great. Confusing, convoluted, not intuitive at all, and makes difficult some things that should be very simple. The battery doesn't last very long, so I constantly have to recharge it. It's one of the only ones that allows "activity-based" function (meaning you can set it up so that you press 1 button for whatever activity you want to do, rather than just control individual devices all the time). Overall, great remote. I only have 2 complaints. I've had several URC remotes in the last few years, and this one is my favorite. 2.
1. The software is VERY poor. If I could buy a 2nd battery, it wouldn't be a big deal, but so far I haven't been able to find one. They REALLY need to update the software, and should make the battery a higher capacity (or sell one), or make a regular 2nd battery (and charger) available for sale.
After another two hours learning the software I figure I'd need another 4-6 hours to complete the job - no thanks. I've recently upgraded my entire home theater system to a full THX setup and wanted to treat myself to a comparable universal remote. Right from the start I was disappointed in this remote as only two of my six components were in the online database (all name brand gear). Before I decided to return this I jumped over to the LogiTech website and found all my gear listed and a much simpler software interface. Life is too short to spend a day programming your remote, unless it also gets the popcorn and drinks for you.
